My journey in quilting began in the year 1997 as we were beginning to consider moving back to my husband’s home in West Virginia. We were living in Carroll County, MD at the time. I’m from Maryland and my husband had moved there upon graduation from college to work at the Hewlett-Packard Baltimore office. We met in 1988 and married in 1989.
I have always loved creating things by hand. Thanks to a neighbor growing up in Kensington, MD, I learned to crochet when I was 10 years old. I loved spending time in my room listening to the record player (yes, I’m that old) and crocheting one project after another. Always baby gifts or afghans.
I began my first business to help me stay home following the birth of our second child. It started by the inspiration of a resident at the condo sales office where I worked at the time. I preserved Bridal Bouquets and other floral mementos. We began to work on selling the business when we decided to list our MD home in 1997, as I did not want to take it with me to WV at that time. Since it was a regional business, I would have had to start from the ground up for marketing not to mention hauling and storing all of the equipment while we built our new home!
Hence, the beginning of my sewing/machine embroidery adventures in 1997. At that time, I was doing it all for hobby. I was otherwise busy raising my children, who were at that time 7 and 3 years old.
June of 1999, and we were finally able to move into our new home. We had lived in a trailer home across the road from the building site for a year.
Once moved, I got the business itch again. I honestly don’t remember what inspired me to a longarm machine, but within a few months after moving, we purchased my Gammill Classic longarm on a 14 ft. frame. So much for the planned family room downstairs. It became my quilting and sewing room! In the nine years while machine quilting, I attended numerous MQS Conventions in the mid-west for classes and tools. “Machine Quilting Showcase”. They sadly have since dissolved.
Fast forward, 2008 took us on a new journey. My life long love for all animals took us into the breeding industry….as in dogs. As in (shhhhhh….purists cover your ears) Doodle dogs. Our business did well, although not without a lot of heartbreaks and stress over the years. It’s not a business for the faint of heart, but whenever we hit a stumbling block, our Faith and Our Lord brought us through. Due to the huge overhead of beginning a dog breeding business (controversial among many, but please….do not judge based on animal rights activists and their nonsense), I sold my beloved Gammill and all the accessories I had obtained over the years.
In 2017, my husband, along with thousands of other HP employees, were notified they no longer be employed. 34 years of service, and all we received was 3 months of severance. We lost medical insurance, etc. We were only in our mid-50’s and not prepared to retire financially.
I know God knew when I started breeding in 2008 my husband would lose his job in 2017. My established dog breeding business is what carried us through what would have otherwise been a very devastating time financially. I focus on the many blessings in the timing (although we did have a time of grief) instead of the negative in how he and so many others lost their jobs.
17 years later, and we are still breeding (Sheepadoodles) on occasion to help with the ongoing costs of caring for our adults. A recent downturn in the market made us rethink our program going forward, not to mention it is a very physical job and I’m not getting any younger! We will be retiring out of the business in the near future as God allows in His Timing.
Meanwhile in 2019, just before the Covid craziness, I decided to purchase a new sewing/embroidery machine for fun. I wanted to reignite that creative side of me. At the time, it was with the idea of hobby only and a little reprieve from the dog breeding business.
Okay, I have been through a few upgrades since then and currently own two of the top of the line sewing/embroidery machines which I am enjoying. We will be offering custom embroidery services as well.
Post Covid, as the puppy market began a free fall to short of non-existent, I started to rethink my future. I mean, I’m only in my early 60’s and not ready to give up yet!!!!
AND NOW WE BEGIN OUR NEW CHAPTER!
My earlier machine quilting business was The Quilting Finale. So naturally in restarting our Machine Quilting Business, we have chosen to name it The Quilting Finale Revival. We have already registered our business and new name with the State of West Virginia.
In my earlier days of Longarm Quilting, I primarily worked from the front of my machine doing custom quilting. My machine was my paint brush and the quilt was my canvas. Occasionally I would have a request for freehand edge to edge which I also loved.
With our newly acquired Bernina Q24 on a Pro Frame, we opted to add their automated system QMatic (exclusive to Bernina) which also includes Art & Stitch software which will allow us to modify and customize designs.
Although I have a long way to go in learning the automated system and all it can do, I also plan to dabble in how much I can still do with my freehand custom work. I know I'm a little rusty. I'm doing well with the automated Edge to Edge with the QMatic software. I am also scheduled for a several day retreat in Massachusetts in May of 2025 to learn from one of the best long armers in the business today as well as several years of experience working with the Bernina Q24 with QMatic. She is also a master in proper loading of each quilt and maintaining consistency to create the straightest and squarest quilt possible despite any imperfections within the quilt top. I will be sharing more about this retreat, the instructor and all the valuable information and training we will receive following the retreat.
I'll be adding photos of quilts and design samples in the days, weeks and months ahead as we build our new website. We are currently accepting quilt tops for automated edge to edge designs. Please contact me at quiltingfinale9925@gmail.com for more information and pricing. I will be adding a pricing page within our website as time allows.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about us and our background in Longarm Machine Quilting.
